🤖 Elon Musk’s xAI releases its latest flagship model, Grok 3 - LINK

Elon Musk's AI company, xAI, has introduced its latest AI model, Grok-3, which boasts over ten times the computing power of its predecessor. Early tests indicate that Grok-3 outperforms models from OpenAI, Google, and DeepSeek. It features advanced reasoning capabilities, allowing it to tackle complex questions by breaking them into smaller tasks.

Grok-3 offers two modes: "Think," which displays step-by-step reasoning, and "Big Brain," designed for more demanding tasks. Additionally, xAI has launched Deep Search, a next-generation search engine. Despite previous criticisms regarding misinformation, Grok-3 aims to be a "maximally truth-seeking AI."

Access to Grok-3 is available through the Grok app with an X Premium Plus subscription starting at $40 per month. A new subscription tier, SuperGrok, offers advanced features for $30 monthly. Future enhancements include a synthesized voice feature, and plans to open-source Grok-2 in the coming months.

It's supposed to be smarter, wittier, and ready to take on the AI giants. But is it a game-changer or just another AI flex?

🚀 Thinking Machines Lab is ex-OpenAI CTO Mira Murati’s new startup - LINK

Mira Murati, the former Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI, has launched a new AI startup named Thinking Machines Lab. This San Francisco-based company aims to make AI systems more accessible and customizable for the public. Murati has assembled a team of experts, including former OpenAI co-founder John Schulman and ex-OpenAI engineer Barrett Zoph.

The company's mission is to help individuals tailor AI to their specific needs, rather than creating fully autonomous systems. They emphasize public transparency by regularly publishing technical research and code. This approach seeks to democratize AI tools and knowledge, enabling a broader audience to harness AI's potential.

Murati's experience at OpenAI, where she contributed to projects like ChatGPT, positions her well to lead this initiative. Thinking Machines Lab plans to collaborate with the larger research community, fostering scientific progress through shared knowledge and resources.

💼 HP to Acquire Parts of Humane, Ai Pin Startup From Ex-Apple Managers, for $116 Million - LINK

AI startup Humane has announced the discontinuation of its AI Pin device following a $116 million acquisition deal with HP. The agreement includes the transfer of Humane's employees, software, and patents to HP, while sales of the AI Pin have been halted. Service for existing devices will cease on February 28, 2025.

Customers who purchased the AI Pin after November 15, 2024, are eligible for refunds, with claims accepted until February 27. Humane's co-founders, formerly of Apple, will join HP's new AI innovation lab, HP IQ. Despite initial interest, the AI Pin faced criticism over design and functionality, leading to its discontinuation.

HP's acquisition excludes the AI Pin device business, which will be wound down. The focus will be on integrating Humane's software platform and intellectual property into HP's products, aiming to enhance AI capabilities across their offerings.

⚖️ AI 'hallucinations' in court papers spell trouble for lawyers - LINK

AI-generated "hallucinations," where AI fabricates information, are causing issues in the legal field. A notable case involved attorneys from Morgan & Morgan who faced potential sanctions for submitting fictitious case citations in a lawsuit against Walmart. The firm issued an internal warning, highlighting the risks of unverified AI use in legal work.

This incident is part of a broader trend, with at least seven similar cases in the past two years where AI-generated inaccuracies led to attorney discipline. While AI can aid in legal research and drafting, experts stress the necessity for lawyers to verify AI-generated information to meet ethical standards.

Consequences for relying on unverified AI outputs have included significant fines and penalties, underscoring a prevalent lack of AI literacy within the legal profession. Legal educators advocate for proper training and caution in using AI tools, emphasizing that technological advancements do not diminish the responsibility for accuracy in legal practice.

Should AI be trusted in the courtroom, or is this a legal disaster waiting to happen?
