The 10 Best Google Search Tricks that you should know

Quotation marks, searching just a single site, excluding information with a hyphen, and more tips

Learning how to Google is helpful

but there's way more to it than just typing some words into the search engine.

Use these Google Search tricks to get more relevant results in less time.

1. Use Quotes to Find Something Specific

One cool Google trick is putting quotation marks around a phrase.

When you do this, Google looks for that exact phrase, words together, no spaces.

It's super helpful for finding stuff, but be careful because it limits your search results.

You might use it when Google isn't giving you what you want.

For instance, let's say you're looking for the best coffee in Nashville.

If Google keeps showing you coffee places in Tennessee

You can fix it by typing "Nashville Indiana" to get results for the right place.

2. Select a Category Tab for Relevant Results

Google isn't just about typing in one thing and getting results.

See those options at the top?

You can click on 'Images' to find only pictures,

'Videos' for videos, 'News' for news, 'Shopping' for shopping stuff, 'Maps' for maps, and more.

It helps you find what you want faster without typing extra words.

Sometimes Google does this for you, but it depends on what you're looking for.

3. Include Only the Important Keywords

When searching on Google, keep it simple and focused.

Think about the core reason for your search.

For instance, if you want a new phone and you've had enough of iPhones, avoid being too wordy like

"I lost my iPhone! I'm looking for a new phone, but I don't want an iPhone anymore.โ€

Google might still think you're interested in iPhones.

Instead, try these simpler, clearer searches:

new Android phones
iPhone alternatives

Use everyday language,

keep it easy to understand,

and keep your sentences short.

This helps Google find the best results for what you need.

4. Search Specific Websites With a Colon

Google can find stuff on tons of websites

but you don't need it to do that.

If you only want results from one site,

tell Google to do that with this trick:

wooden clocks site:allmodern.com

I do this a lot.

It's super handy when I'm on a site without its own search bar.

5. Filter Results With a Hyphen

You can easily control what shows up in your Google search results by using a hyphen.

Just put a hyphen after any word or phrase you don't want to see.

For example, if you're searching for a dishwasher but

don't want results from a specific company

like Walmart

you can tell Google to leave out results from that site like this:

buy dishwasher -site:walmart.com

The hyphen trick also works with other Google search tricks.

If you're looking for board games for adults

and don't want results related to kids

you can do this:

board games for adults -kids

And if you're searching for "work from home" jobs

but want to filter out positions that require experience

or are a hybrid of in-person and remote work

you can use:

"work from home" "no experience" -hybrid

That's it! Google will give you results that match

what you're looking for without the stuff you don't want.

6. Find Something to Watch

Want to find websites to watch movies?

Use Google.

No need to scroll through the results.

Just type a few words

and Google suggests options at the top of the page.

You can see in the picture changing the

search is easy with the buttons.

Try these searches to see just how useful this is:

watch free sci-fi movies
2022 movies on YouTube
drama TV shows on Netflix
documentaries on Pluto TV

7. Use AI to Summarize Results

If you're using Google Chrome

here's a cool trick for you!

Google has this awesome AI tool

that can help you get quick answers

without the hassle of clicking on a bunch of different websites.

It basically finds the most important stuff for you

and puts it at the top of the page.

So, you don't have to spend time digging

through search results anymore.

Cool, right?

8. Search Using an Image

Do you know that you can use Google

to find stuff not just with words

but also with pictures?

Just click on the little camera icon and upload a pic.

I tried it with this shoe

and bam

it found the exact one on Macy's website.

So much easier than typing 'navy shoes' and sifting through tons of search results!

9. Define Any Word

Sure, there are lots of dictionary websites out there

but Google's pretty good at defining words too.

Just type 'define' and then the word you want to know about

and Google will tell you what it means

show you how it's used in a sentence

and even give you some similar words.

10. Find Web Pages Published Before or After a Certain Date

One of my all-time favorite ways

to find particular information is to incorporate

advanced Google Search commands like this one.

Writing before or after when searching will constrain

all the results to only the articles that were published

before/after the specified dates.

For example,

here's how to find climate-related articles

that were last published between January 1 and January 15, 2015:

climate after:2015-01-01 before:2015-01-15

Only one option is necessary

and you can tie it in with other tips from this page

like this:

Android site:lifewire.com after:2023-09-03
